John Singer Sargent made his name as the most sought-after portrait painter of his age, but every summer he left the studio behind. In Venice, the Alps, Spain and Morocco he painted for himself, quickly and in full sunlight, and these are the works in this collection: a Venetian canal, the Simplon Pass, an open doorway in Morocco, a garden near Lucca, oxen resting in the shade.
