Vintage Palm Wall Art Prints

Two kinds of palm sit in this collection. The Amazonian survey plates — Astrocaryum, Bactris, Amylocarpus, set down by João Barbosa Rodrigues — are spiny, structural and slightly strange, closer to a botanist’s field record than to decoration. Beside them the familiar ones: date palms, coconut palms and broad fan palms, drawn when a palm still meant somewhere far away. Where our vintage fern prints are fine and soft-edged, a palm is architecture — one strong vertical that holds a wall on its own.

The palette is restrained: greens against cream, and a handful reduced to line alone in black and white. That is why palms move so easily between rooms — very little colour here to argue with what is already in the space, and the drawing does the work. What they add is height, calm and a faintly faraway feeling.

How to hang them

The proportions decide it. These are tall subjects that reward a tall frame, hung a touch higher than a flower study so the fronds have room above the furniture. One large palm centred over a console or a sideboard is the strongest single move here. Pairs work when the two fronds lean towards each other, and several matched pairs are already sized for exactly that. Give them empty wall — a palm needs room around it in a way a fruit study does not. For something softer alongside, our vintage leaf prints hang well in the same grouping.
