Towns, rivers and city lights as the painters saw them. Henri Rousseau is the heart of this collection: the Eiffel Tower, the Seine at sunset, the Pont de Sèvres, Montsouris Park and the banks of the Bièvre, all in his flat, careful style. Beside him sit John Singer Sargent's Venice canals, Van Gogh's Starry Night and Starry Night over the Rhône, Cézanne's Village Square, the north portal of Chartres and Donald Shaw MacLaughlan's etchings of the Chicago skyline.

Where our vintage landscapes are fields, hills and open country, these are places people built: bridges, towers, quays and squares. The palette moves between Rousseau's soft greens and dusk pinks, Sargent's warm Venetian light, Van Gogh's deep night blues and the black line of MacLaughlan's Chicago.
