Where vintage bird prints feel at home

Vintage bird prints belong in the collected home: the room that pairs an antique console with a linen sofa, a stack of old books with a stone urn, and never quite looks finished because it keeps gathering things worth keeping. They suit eclectic and traditional homes, farmhouses and apartments with a vintage leaning, and they come into their own in plantation-style interiors, among shutters, rattan, ceiling fans and dark timber.

In a coastal or tropical-themed home, a hand-coloured heron, a pair of parrots or a flight of terns does what a plain landscape cannot. It brings the natural world indoors, with colour, energy and a sense of life. Wherever you want a room to feel warmer and more alive, a bird on the wall is one of the simplest places to begin.

Collector's pieces, made to be grouped

These plates were collector's pieces from the start. Naturalists such as Audubon and the Goulds published them a few at a time, and households framed them in sets. They still look their best that way: three songbirds in a row along a passage, a grid of six parrots above a dining table, or a pair of herons either side of a doorway.

Let the print decide where it goes. Audubon's great plates need room, so hang one large above a long server or console. Smaller birds are happier on a narrow wall, in a reading nook, or leaning against the wall beside a mirror on a sideboard, with a lamp at the other end.
