The working coast of another century — surf breaking on a Maine shore, schooners at anchor off Nassau, boys wading out in a dory, clam diggers on wet sand, terns over an empty beach. Winslow Homer runs right through this collection, alongside Bellows, Monet and Sargent. Where our contemporary beachscapes are pared back and graphic, these carry weather, salt and incident.

What they bring to a room is a calm that still has movement in it. Sea greens and greys, wet sand and pale ochre, the white of breaking surf — a palette that sits easily against almost anything and never dates. There is real nostalgia in them too: an unhurried, hard-working seaside a long way from a modern beach holiday. That is what makes them at home in a study or a hallway, not only in a coastal house.

How to hang them

Almost everything here is landscape format, so hang horizontally and a little low — above a sofa, a console or a bed head — so the horizon sits near eye level. A pair reads beautifully down a passage, and they group well with our vintage landscapes if you want to build a wall of them.
